100 years Jungfrau Railways
100 years Jungfrau Railways
On the 21st of February in 1912, at 5.35 am the break- through on the Jungfraujoch was achieved. After 16 years of hard work, the men fell into each others arms. The inventor of the Jungfrau Railways, Adolf Guyer-Zeller, who had the idea for this project on a hike from the Schilthorn to Mürren, died in 1899 before the opening of the Jungfraujoch.
The costs of the Railways, which carry the people through the Eiger and Mönch mountains to the highest Train Station in Europe (3‘454 m), were about 16 Million Swiss Franks.
That was the double of the planned costs.
The Jungfrau Railways celebrates her birthday with a lot of activities. The official ceremony is on the 1st of August on the top with invited guests, exactly 100 years after the opening of the highest Train Station in Europe.
The anniversary of the Railway is also creating interest abroad. A wooden bench of the Jungfrau Railways travels around the world. Visiting among other places Berlin, London, Paris and in a lot of towns in Asia.
On the world exhibition in Yeosu (South Korea) and the Olympic Games in London the bicentenary will be also presented.
